Perimenopause / Menopause Transition

The perimenopause or the menopause transition is the period of time prior to menopause when ovarian hormone production starts to change. This can lead to the onset of menopausal symptoms due to a reduction in hormone levels but can also lead to symptoms due to increased hormonal fluctuations. Psychological symptoms can be very prevalent during this time period, as well as physical symptoms such as headaches and palpitations.

Menstrual changes are common during this time period, and these can be subtle or pronounced with for e.g. periods becoming shorter, lighter, heavier, prolonged and usually periods start to space out when approaching menopause.

Because hormones can fluctuate significantly during the perimenopause, diagnosis is based on an accurate history and assessment rather than via blood tests.
