Lifestyle Changes
The menopause is associated with an increased risk of developing cardiovascular disease and osteoporosis. A healthy lifestyle and introducing lifestyle changes can be an integral aspect of menopause care in order to improve general health and wellbeing, and to reduce the negative impact that the loss of oestrogen can have on bone health and cardiovascular risk.
Eating a healthy balanced diet can support weight management, reduce the risk of developing cardiovascular disease and type 2 diabetes mellitus, is an important aspect of bone health, and can improve menopausal symptoms. There is evidence to support the use of a balanced, Mediterranean style diet, consisting of plenty of fruit, vegetables, fish, protein, fibre, and complex carbohydrates.
Any form of Exercise can potentially improve menopausal symptoms such as sleep, mood symptoms, and sense of general wellbeing. Exercise can also help with weight reduction as the peri/menopause can be associated with weight gain in some women.
Weightbearing exercise ( examples : brisk walking, running, dancing, resistance training, weights, tennis) is also very important for bone health and reducing the risk of developing osteopenia and osteoporosis.
Other important lifestyle factors include stopping smoking, reducing alcohol intake, sleep hygiene, and stress reduction where possible.
